As the tragic building collapse continues to unfold, politics has been put aside and both Republican and Democratic officials have joined together to focus entirely on rescue efforts. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava (D) told The Floridian that the support coming from Gov. Ron DeSantis and the federal government was nothing less than "extraordinary," adding, "we have everything that we need from our state and federal agencies. And cutting red tape, everything necessary for these families, for the search, for the rescue, subsequently for the investigation. We are lacking at this time for nothing."
The Mayor of Surfside, Charles Burkett, also praised the help coming from the state and the federal government, including President Joe Biden, Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott.
Mayor Burkett thanked President Biden (D), saying, "whose office called me the day after this happened and said in so many words that we are going to send you whatever you need, and we are going to cut the red tape. And he kept his word. He's a politician who kept his word."
Echoing what Mayor Cava said about having more than enough resources, Burkett said, "We are loaded down with resources, as a matter of fact, we don't need more resources, we just need more luck."
Burkett said that everyone has kept their promise, this as the rescue effort may soon begin to shift to one of recovery.
"Our two US Senators, Rick Scott calls me every single day, and leaves a message, and says 'don't call me back, I just want to call and let you know I'm here for you. If you need me call," said Burkett, adding that "Senator Rubio has done the same, I've seen him out here multiple times, the Governor has asked to tell him whatever I need. He's done that. They've all kept their promises. We're here to pull all these people out and reunite them with their family."
