Former President Donald Trump said he “looks forward” to officially making a “certain announcement” given at “the right time” regarding his decision on whether he will be making a 2024 comeback, emphasizing that his supporters would be “very happy” with his answer.
“The answer is I’m absolutely enthused. I look forward to making an announcement at the right time,” Trump said in a phone interview on Candace Owens’ Daily Wire talk show. “As you know, it’s very early. But I think people are going to be very, very happy when I make a certain announcement.”
If Trump were to formally declared his candidacy at this time, he would be required under election law to widely disclose his personal finances. In addition, campaign finance laws would dictate the former president as an officially announced candidate on raising and spending his campaign funds until the 2024 cycle officially begins.
“You know, for campaign finance reasons, you really can’t do it too early because it becomes a whole different thing,” Trump told Owens in referring to the timing of the announcement. “Otherwise, I think I’d give you an answer that you’d be very happy with. So we’re looking at that very, very seriously.”
“And all I’d say is: stay tuned,” Trump said.
While Trump has floated a potential White House comeback, his latest interview with Owens marks the first time he has indicated that supporters would be “happy” with his announcement. In previous interviews over the last few weeks, Trump has noted he wouldn’t make any final decision until after seeing the results of the 2022 midterm election and to see whether the GOP regains control of both chambers of Congress.
Owens, a staunch Trump supporter, joked when asking the former president about joining him as his 2024 running mate, to which Trump replied with a laugh, “What a good choice that would be. That would be fantastic. You would be fantastic.”
“I guess I’ll take you at your word that in 2024 Trump and Owens are going to be on the ticket,” Owens responded.
Trump has previously floated Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be his potential running mate in 2024. Last week, Trump told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, “He’s a friend of mine. I endorsed Ron, and after I endorsed him, he took off like a rocket ship. He’s done a great job as governor.”
“A lot of people like that—you know, I’m just saying what I read and what you read —they love that ticket,” Trump said. “But certainly, Ron would be considered. He’s a great guy.”
In the wide-range 30-minute interview, Trump indicated that he would be “doing” a social media platform soon – on top of his media online platform space on his website. However, the former president argued that his daily emailed press releases allow him to get the same amount of media coverage more elegantly, without limiting him based on character count.
