Almost five months after the January 6th Capitol Riot took place, Congress is taking action to prevent a similar incident from happening again through a "January 6th Commission" that Democrats are trying to put together to look into the root cause of the riot. The commission has been heavily backed by Democrats, but has been the subject of scrutiny by the GOP, especially Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) who called the proposal a "Partisan joke."
Rubio went on a Twitter rant this week where he explained his stance of opposing the commission and confirmed that he will vote no if or when the commission arrives on the Senate floor.
The Floridian reached out to Sen. Rubio for further comments about his earlier remarks.
"Let me be clear, there’s no cover-up of what occurred on that horrific day," stated Rubio. "Every single person who was a part of the violent actions of January 6th should be prosecuted and put in jail, and that’s exactly what the Justice Department is doing."
Although Democrats have described the commission as being bipartisan and preventative of further insurrections, Senator Rubio claims the proposal has "the only objective of damaging Republicans."
The Senator also discounted the need for an investigation due to other ongoing investigations into January 6th, claiming that "Capitol Police has done its own commission on what went wrong that day," adding "committees in Congress are investigating."
Senator Rubio joins Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in uniting GOP senators against the legislation. Unfortunately for Republicans, there may not be enough of them to stop such a proposal, since the wild card Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) has already voiced he will support a commission.
