This week in Washington, Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) added to his long history of supporting veterans. After putting veterans first in the vaccine rollout and being named the most effective Republican in the House, Rep. Bilirakis recently saw his bipartisan measure, the Moms Who Served Act, passed in the House of Representatives.
The bill passed the House this week and is a priority for the American Legion, as it ensures all female veterans have access to maternal health care and support they may need.
"These critical investments in the maternal healthcare of all female veterans receive will help save lives and lead to healthier outcomes for moms and babies," said the Congressman, "Our nation's heroes deserve the best possible care, and our legislation gets us one step closer to achieving that goal."
This legislation would also lead to the first-ever commission that would lead a comprehensive study of maternal mortality, morbidity, and disparities among female veterans.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will also be receiving a long-overdue maternity care coordination program. According to the Department of Labor, women only made up roughly 10% of the veteran population as of 2019.
Bilirakis is said to keep hoping for bipartisan support in his efforts to support veterans. The Moms Who Served Act is only the third bill passed by Bilirakis this Congress with support across the aisle.
