Murphy Champions Biden's Order to Curb Gun Violence

Share

For the past week, it’s been rumored that President Joe Biden (D) would be enacting an executive order on gun control, and this morning the president formally made the announcement had he looked to curb "gun violence" with a stroke of his pen.  President declared that the Department of Justice would begin the process of requiring buyers of “ghost guns” to undergo background checks within 30 days. The President also announced that concealed assault-style firearms would be regulated within 60 days along with pistol stabilizing braces that allow weapons to be used more accurately. In response to the President's announcement, Florida Democrats championed the order.

Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D) took to Twitter to share her support of the executive order.

“I applaud the President for taking strong action to stop the deadly drumbeat of gun violence in our communities,” said the leader of the Blue Dog Coalition. “Now the Senate should pass legislation we’ve already passed in the House to keep the most dangerous weapons out of the hands of the most dangerous people.”

Although Democrats across the country have praised President Biden for the stance, Republicans are denouncing the call, saying that their respective states will not abide by the order.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy called the order “unconstitutional overreach,” adding that “Republicans will strongly oppose and pursue every option – be it legislative or judicial – to protect the right to keep and bear arms.”
