Representative Dan Daley (D-97) has been a champion of children's safety ever since the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting occurred 3 years ago.

That's why after his recent re-election, Rep. Daley has begun to sponsor a bill to tackle school safety in an unconventional, but effective way.

HB 489, one of Daley's first pieces of legislation this session, aims to get principals to enforce K-12 students in Florida public schools to wear student IDs.

The Floridian met with Daley in his Capitol office this week where he claims that the bill, "was an idea from local high school students in Broward."

He adds that, "It is not directly related to Douglas, but I think we may actually look at an amendment to require students to wear student IDs."

Daley also informed us that in addition to mandated IDs,  the  "bill is targeted to putting a crisis intervention hotline on the back of an ID," adding that the hotline is not only for school shooting as one may think, as Daley hopes to see this solve other issues such as, "Bullying and or abuse."

Daley admits that a lot of students don't currently wear IDs, and if this was done before, then perhaps the Parkland shooting may not have occurred..

Although this bill would only apply to K-12 students, Daley has gained the support of the UCF Student government to help include Florida public universities within the legislation.

Daley also stated, "I don't have a strong preference, I think it could be helpful, but right now it is just K-12."

Daley expects to get bipartisan support from his Republican colleagues as he describes the bill as, "Not a big ask."
