Taxpayer-funded abortions have been a controversial topic that only grew more contentious with the inclusion of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Now, freshman Florida Rep. Kat Cammack (R) announced this week that she has “joined 199 of my colleagues in defense of the Hyde Amendment, a measure which protects the rights of American taxpayers opposed to publicly funded abortions.”
The list of lawmakers also includes fellow freshman Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) and Rep. Greg Steube (R).
Cammack also commented that “the radical Left’s attempts at repealing it goes against decades of bipartisanship.”
In the letter directed to leadership in the House and the Senate, the lawmakers argue that “repealing these pro-life provisions would destroy nearly half a century of bipartisan consensus.” It’s explained that “each year since 1976, Congress has included Hyde protections in annually enacted appropriations,” and they also pointed out that “as recent as June 2019, former Vice President Joe Biden supported the Hyde Amendment and acknowledged that it works harmoniously with federal funding for women’s healthcare.”
Cammack, since entering the House, has positioned herself as a staunch conservative. One issue she's championed is her pro-life views, and she’s thrown her support behind the Hyde Amendment because it “alone has saved the lives of over 2 million innocent babies and continues to protect the conscience rights of a vast majority of Americans opposed to publicly funded abortions.”
