Trump Doubles Down on $2,000 Stimulus Checks

Share

In a turn of events, President Donald Trump (R) and Democrats have found a compromise in wanting to direct $2,000 in stimulus checks to Americans as they continue to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Republicans have now opposed the measure, and President Trump is not backing down from releasing the stimulus checks to Americans. Instead, he’s doubling down on the effort and hoping that lawmakers will adjust.

In a Twitter post this morning, President Trump commented, “I simply want to get our great people $2,000, rather than the measly $600 that is now in the bill.” The President also signaled that he wants to “stop the billions of dollars in ‘pork.’”

After the initial bill was passed by both Congress and the Senate, President Trump released a video statement sharing his disapproval of the bill and saying that lawmakers needed to make a better effort for Americans as they continue to face challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, the President further expressed his disapproval of the bill, commenting that “it’s called the Covid relief bill but it has almost nothing to do with Covid.”

One notable name that opposes the President’s chance is Vice President Joe Biden (D), who commented that the President is only prolonging aid for Americans who need it.

In a statement over the weekend, Biden detailed that “this abdication of responsibility has devastating consequences,” noting that “it is the day after Christmas, and millions of families don’t know if they’ll be able to make ends meet because of President Donald Trump’s refusal to sign an economic relief bill approved by Congress with an overwhelming and bipartisan majority.”

Both conservatives and progressive lawmakers have found a compromise in criticizing the bill, and those slamming the legislation even include members of “the Squad.” Rep. Ayanna Presley (D) appeared to praise the President by expressing that Trump was taking a “hard line in support of what Progressives have been fighting for.”
