As the 2020 election concludes, the congressional races across the United States have all but finished, but one state that is documenting returns it did not expect is the sunshine state. These returns are currently being calculated by Florida Democrats who lost two key congressional districts after they had turned them blue in the 2018 midterm elections.
Respectively, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez (R) and Maria Elvira Salazar (R) both won their races for Florida’s 26th and 27th congressional districts.
In turn, many political pundits have argued that the “blue wave” that Democrats were expecting to amass did not produce the results they were expecting would be produced.
Nonetheless, Terrie Rizzo (D), the Chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, took to Twitter to congratulate Democrats and the voters that were mobilized for turning out.
Rizzo commented that “our Florida losses sting deep, for our party, the candidates, and the five million Florida Democrats looking to build on the progress we have made.” However, “together with our grassroots, state, and national partners, we need to do a deep drive to address… data, messaging and turnout issues that caused these losses, and where our party goes from here.”
The chairwoman thanked “all of our down-ballot Democrats, our party leaders, our staff, and our wonderful volunteers who gave their blood, sweat, and tears to help Democrats win” before adding that Democrats “are confident in the ultimate victory of Joe Biden” in the presidential election.
In a statement, the Congressional Latino-Jewish Caucus denounced the decision, calling it "inflammatory and unwarranted."
