Demings Expresses Deep Disappointed in Senate Republicans

Share

Florida rep. Val Demings (D), who was on the shortlist to become former Vice President Joe Biden’s (D) Vice Presidential pick, was recently a guest on PBS’ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover.

In the interview segment with the Florida lawmaker, Demings discussed a number of topics, which included the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the subsequent nomination from President Trump (R) to fill the seat.

Leading up to the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, Demings has been tweeting comments from her Republican colleagues that pushed back against the nomination of President Barack Obama’s (D) Supreme Court Justice nominee, Merrick Garland.

When asked if Democrats would do the exact same thing if they were in control, Demings assured that she can’t speak on what Democrats would do, but “I know what I would do.”

The Florida Democrat noted that her years in law enforcement taught her that “we had a mission, and our job was to accomplish that mission,” so she “brought that same attitude to Congress, and I have to say I’ve been quite disappointed that politics can take precedence over what’s just plain all right and wrong.”

Demings noted that “while I’m not perfect, I’ve always tried to do” the right thing because that’s exactly how her parents raised her.

Further expressing her disappointment with the Republican Senate, Demings detailed that "one Senator after another said 'nope, we're too close to an election during President Obama's tenure. We're going to wait until the new President" and "that the American people should weigh in." Demings added that "at that time, I think, it was about 9 months before the election and here we are 40 days away."

With a new nominee set to be voted on in the next few weeks, all eyes are on the Senate, which could possibly shift the Senate for decades to come.
