To win the presidency in the 2020 presidential election, vice president Joe Biden must first win the state of Florida, but if he chooses California Rep. Karen Bass (D), the prospect of winning the Sunshine State is all-but dead on arrival.
Biden must win over the large Cuban-American population in the state, and now the growing Colombian and Venezuelan communities that sympathize with the exile community that has lived here since the beginning of the Cuban Revolution over five decades ago.
Rep. Bass will be a liability to Biden after her past vocal support for the Communist and murderous dictator Fidel Castro in 2016, when she stated that “the passing of the Comandante en Jefe is a great loss to the people of Cuba.”
Bass told Fox News’ Chris Wallace that she regretted saying what she said about Castro, and dismissed it as just one statement.
“I absolutely would have not put that statement out and I will tell you that, after talking to my colleagues who represent the state of Florida [and] raised those concerns with me, lesson learned; would not do that again for sure.”
But Senator Marco Rubio (R) is saying not buying what Bass is selling.
Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity” show, Sen. Rubio said that it was not “about one comment,” rather about her “long history of being an admirer of the Castro regime.”
“She’s not being sincere when she says it's about one comment,” said Rubio “Congresswoman Bass has a long, appears to be a three, four-decade history of being an admirer of the Castro regime. It started as a student, it continued during her time in government, and even up until her time here in congress.
Rubio also took issue with Bass’ assertion that Republicans are calling Democrats Communists, calling the remark “false” because he has worked with many Democrats both in Floridan and around the country on the issue of Cuba and it’s a negative influence throughout the Western Hemisphere.d
“A number of Democrats that have worked with him on this issue. This is about her. This is about her long track record. And frankly, she would be the highest-profile Castro sympathizer we have ever had at any level in American government,” said Rubio.
