Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he has chosen Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) as his running mate, the first Black woman ever tapped on a major party’s presidential ticket

“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden tweeted.

“ I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people, and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign,” Biden added.

In an email to supporters announcing his VP pick, Biden touted Harris as someone who is “smart, tough, and ready to lead.”

“I’ve decided that Kamala Harris is the best person to help me take this fight to Donald Trump and Mike Pence and then to lead this nation starting in January 2021,” Biden said. “I first met Kamala through my son Beau. They were both Attorneys General at the same time. He had enormous respect for her and her work. I thought a lot about that as I made this decision. There is no one’s opinion I valued more than Beau’s and I’m proud to have Kamala standing with me on this campaign.”

Harris tweeted after news broke that she is “honored to join him as our party’s nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”

President Trump responded by tweeting out a campaign attack ad video, dubbed “Slow Joe and Phony Kamala.”

Trump’s campaign in a statement criticized Biden’s vice presidential pick as a “phony” who will be a “political living will” that will embrace the “left’s radical manifesto.”

“Not long ago, Kamala Harris called Joe Biden a racist and asked for an apology she never received,” Trump 2020 senior advisor Katrina Pierson said in a statement. “Clearly, Phony Kamala will abandon her own morals, as well as try to bury her record as a prosecutor, in order to appease the anti-police extremists controlling the Democrat Party.”

“In her failed attempt at running for president, Kamala Harris gleefully embraced the left’s radical manifesto, calling for trillions of dollars in new taxes and backing Bernie Sanders’ government takeover of health care. She is proof that Joe Biden is an empty shell being filled with the extreme agenda of the radicals on the left,” Pierson added. “Joe Biden is no moderate, and with Harris as his ‘political living will,’ he is surrendering control of our nation to the radical mob with promises to raise taxes, cut police funding, kill energy jobs, open our borders, and appease socialist dictators.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDonald lashed out on the California Senator’s  “extreme positions” as the reason the “left-wing mob” selected her Biden’s running mate.

“A hiding, diminished, and incoherent Joe Biden didn’t just select a vice-presidential candidate, he chose the person who would actually be in charge the next four years if he is somehow able to win,” McDonald said in a statement. “Kamala Harris’ extreme positions, from raising taxes to abolishing private health insurance to comparing law enforcement officials to the KKK, show that the left-wing mob is controlling Biden’s candidacy, just like they would control him as president. These radical policies might be popular among liberals, but they are well outside the mainstream for most Americans.”

The announcement comes after months of internal deliberations and secret interview meeting that saw at least a dozen prominent women vetted for the position. Other Black female contenders included former national security adviser Susan Rice, Rep. Val Demings (D-FL), Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and former Georgia 2018 Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. Biden was also considering Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Biden and Harris will deliver remarks together as a ticket on Wednesday in Wilmington, Delaware, just a few days before the Democratic National Convention is scheduled to kick-off virtually on August 17.
