Wasserman Schultz Questions Trump Over Reopening Schools

Share

The President and Republicans are receiving considerable pushback for supporting the notion that students should physically return back to school.

President Trump issued a call for America’s K-12 schools to reopen by the fall and for students to return, arguing that Democrats want to keep schools closed to impact the November election. To ensure that schools reopen, the President threatened to cut federal funding to schools if they didn’t comply. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics added their support to the call of reopening, releasing a statement that “strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.” The organization added that “the importance of in-person learning is well-documented, and there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children because of school closures in the spring of 2020.”

As Florida continues to register skyrocketing cases of COVID-19, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) took to Twitter to voice her disapproval of the measure.

She commented that “while the President tries to force kids back on campus in just a few weeks, doctors & experts are urging the exact opposite, esp if COVID is surging.”

The Florida lawmaker added that “the GOP admin is putting children & staff in danger over a reckless attempt to open the country too fast.”

Florida recently reported a 15,000+ one day increase in COVID-19 cases, the most to date for one day.
