Scott Argues Government Shouldn't "Mandate the Mask"

As South Florida continues to experience a spike in coronavirus cases, Miami-Dade County has been embroiled in a battle of whether or not its constituents want to wear masks to avoid further escalating the pandemic.

Last week, Miami-Dade County Mayor Francis Suarez came forward and addressed constituents over an order that everyone needed to wear a mask out in public.

“What we’ve seen is an increasingly troubling trend of cases that have been continuing to escalate,” the Mayor expressed in a news conference.

He added that “we have seen a recent uptick in cases particularly among young people aged 18 to 35 and we are also seeing an increase in hospitalizations, though we are not yet seeing an increase in the need for ICU beds and ventilators in death.” Saying that “that has a tendency to trail behind the increase in new cases,” Suarez warned that “that is yet to be determined” because “it could yet go up significantly over the next couple of weeks.”

On the issue of Americans having to wear masks out in public, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) took part in an interview with Greta Van Sustern on Gray TV’s Full Court Press over the weekend to discuss the personal responsibility that Americans have during this time.

When asked for his thoughts on the rise of coronavirus cases in the sunshine state, the former Florida Governor affirmed that “people need to wear their masks… they need to social distance,” adding that “we’ve gotta take this seriously.”

On the controversial topic of government mandating its citizens to wear masks out in public, the Florida Senator asserted that he doesn’t “believe government should not mandate the mask. Do I believe people should wear their mask? Absolutely.”
