Florida Rep. Ross Spano (R) joined lawmakers 37 other House Republicans in co-sponsoring the “Protecting Life in Crisis Act,” a measure that lawmakers hope will prohibit federal dollars under the COVID-19 emergency packages from being used to fund abortions and other abortion coverages.
In a statement, Spano commented that “while our country is facing COVID-19, we must ensure that no taxpayer money is used for abortions.”
In addition, the Florida lawmaker believes that “protecting the most vulnerable in society should not take a back seat during a pandemic – if anything, it shows us, even more, how delicate and precious life is.”
As well, the bill will also prevent any federal tax credits from being used to cover post-employment healthcare (COBRA) premiums that would include abortion coverage provisions.
Florida Reps. Neal Dunn, Matt Gaetz, Michael Waltz, and John Rutherford, joined Texas Reps. Randy Weber, Brian Babin, Roger Williams, and Will Hurd, in signing on to the legislation.
