Shalala Slams Sanders as "Unacceptable" Candidate

Share

With Senator Elizabeth Warren (D) officially suspending her presidential campaign, three lone candidates stand, but the race is a two-way fight between former Vice President Joe Biden (D) and Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders (I).

As the candidates set their sight on Florida, a much-needed swing state, Florida lawmakers are voicing their endorsements, and Vice President Joe Biden seems to be picking up steam.

During an interview with CNN, freshman Florida lawmaker Donna Shalala (D) slammed Senator Sanders, saying that “he’s just unacceptable to people in South Florida and people across our state.”

The comments come after the presidential hopeful drew ire over controversial comments that seemed to support the Castro regime in Cuba.

When speaking about Castro, Sanders said it was “unfair to simply say everything is bad” concerning his communist regime. When pressed on his comments, he doubled down on CBS’ 60 Minutes, asserting that “the truth is the truth.”

Then, during a CNN Town Hall night in South Carolina, Sanders explained that Castro’s literacy program “helped people learn to read and write,” which was a “good thing.”

He detailed that “when Fidel Castro first came to power, he initiated a major literacy program. There were a lot of folks in Cuba at that point who were illiterate.”

By implementing the program, Sander noted that Castro “formed the literacy brigade,” which “helped people learn to read and write,” stating that “teaching people to read and write is a good thing.”

Since then, Sanders has been slammed by numerous Florida Democrats, which includes Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D).
