The Clean Waterways Act, which was introduced by Sen. Debbie Mayfield (R) in the Florida Senate, has gained traction as it furthers the sunshine state’s goal of properly responding to environmental concerns. However, despite the bipartisan support that it has received in the political arena, the bill is now facing criticism from environmentalists.
Both Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and Florida’s new Chief Science Officer Thomas Frazer have come out in support of the bill with Frazer calling it “one of the most environmentally progressive pieces of legislation that we’ve seen in over a decade.”
However, Florida Waterkeepers, the Sierra Club and the Florida Springs Council have joined forces to pen a letter to Frazer, asking him to reconsider his support.
In the letter, the environmentalists warn that “as Florida’s first Chief Science Officer, it is essential that your statements to the public reflect the best understanding of environmental policy, especially when your credentials as a scientist are being used to bolster such remarks.”
They asserted that “Floridians must have faith that their Chief Science Officer is above politics and partisanship. Otherwise, we risk sacrificing the credibility of the important position with which you have been entrusted.”
As lawmakers continue to push for the bill’s passing, this move shows that not everyone is on board with the proposed solutions to environmental needs.
