Trump's Legal Time Fights Articles of Impeachment

This week marks an important step in President Trump’s legal woes as the Senate will be hosting hearings regarding his impeachment process. In a turn of events, Alan Dershowitz, an American lawyer and professor of United States constitutional law and criminal law who also endorsed Vice President Joe Biden for President, has agreed to represent President Trump during the affair.

President Trump’s legal team released a statement regarding the impeachment effort, saying that the accusations are “frivolous and dangerous,” adding that the articles of impeachment are “constitutionally invalid.” The team further argued that it’s an attack against Americans.

Dershowitz, in an interview with CNN’s State of the Union, mentioned that he would be relying on an argument used by Benjamin Curtis, a former Supreme Court Justice, during President Andrew Johnson’s impeachment in 1868.

Dershowitz explained that “he argued successfully to the Senate that criminal-like conduct is required.” Furthermore, “that argument prevailed,” and “I will be making that argument as a lawyer on behalf of the President’s defense team against impeachment.”

Robert Ray, a new addition to the President’s legal team, mentioned during an interview on Fox and Friends that “never in our history has there been an impeachment of a President without even an allegation that a crime was committed and that under the circumstances, given that, that is untethered to the foundational principles that come from the Constitution itself.”
