Scott warns of more Iranian protests against "oppressive" regime

Share

2019 has been mired by protests nationwide.

Hong Kong has had its number of protests by pro-democracy supporters who have received significant pushback from the government, which has ended in violent altercations. Venezuela has had its fair share of protests by the same group of concerned citizens, and now Iran will face its own protests amid the country’s shutdown of social media.

This week, the country removed internet access, restricting access in several provinces. In response, many are calling for more protests to honor the dead that were killed during protests last month.

The protests last month were due to rising gasoline prices in the country, and protestors expanded their concerns to include political freedom as well among other issues.

In turn, the government quickly responded by putting the blame on foreign enemies looking to stir up tension within the country.

Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the matter, arguing that the Iranian “government is determined to silence the people’s desire for freedom and democracy first by shutting down internet and now social media.”

Scott added, “this will only lead to further protests against the oppressive government seeking to censor its people from speaking the truth.”

Iran has also been at the center of the political arena under the Trump administration as President Trump was critical of the Iran nuclear deal that was reached under the Obama administration.

In turn, the United States withdrew from the deal that was long blasted by the President.
