As the U.S. Supreme Court considers a case brought by the Trump administration that could end the Obama-era DACA program, House Democrats continue to push the anti-immigrant, racist narrative that they first introduced back when President Trump struck down Obama’s DACA executive order.
South Florida Democratic members of Congress, who have advocated for the closing of the Homestead immigration detention center for children earlier this year, have come out in force to denounce Trump’s “attack on Dreamers.”
It’s sad, but some of your colleagues, friends, and neighbors may lose their legal status due to Trump’s attack on Dreamers,” stated Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) “They’re as American as anyone. We can’t count on a conservative SCOTUS to protect them, so Congress needs to Protect the Dream.”
Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s fellow member of the House, Rep. Ted Deutch (D), also took a shot at the Trump administration by accusing it of using illegal immigrant children as “political pawns.”
Freshman Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) made the fiscal case for Dreamers, staying that ending DACA “would result in $460B in lost GDP” and that billions in tax revenue would be lost if those illegal immigrants left the country.
President Trump tweeted that “many” of those illegal immigrants that fall under DACA status are “no longer young” and “far” from being “angels.”
Trump also stated that Obama himself said the “he had no legal right to sign the order” in question but did it anyway.
“Many of the people in DACA, no longer very young, are far from “angels” tweeted President Trump “Some are very tough, hardened criminals. President Obama said he had no legal right to sign the order, but would anyway. If Supreme Court remedies with overturn, a deal will be made with Dems for them to stay!”
