Trump admin to shut down Homestead immigration detention center

Share

The Homestead detention center that infamously housed illegal alien children may be shut down for good, as it’s been reported that Caliburn, the company that administers the center, will not have their contract renewed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The news of the Caliburn’s contract woes was greeting with open arms by Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D), the freshman congresswoman from Miami that spearheaded the effort to close down the detention center.

Rep. Mucarsel-Powell, who had visited the Homestead facility seven times, has said that the living conditions had not changed since she first visited the detention center.
“The only difference is the amount of kids being detained,” said Mucarsel-Powell “We are holding kids in a prison-like facility. None of you would want to send your children to this facility as a summer camp.”

Mucarsel-Powell also stated that she is now focused on seeing that closed down “all together” because she doesn’t believe anyone should “ever be held in these conditions.”

“Given Caliburn’s poor record of child abuse & neglect, as well as the sheer number of former Administration officials now serving on Caliburn’s board, this is a good first step towards ending one of many corrupt practices this Administration has executed,” added Mucarsel-Powell

Other key Democratic opponents of the Homestead detention center are Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Donna Shalala, who also joined Mucarsel-Powell on several occasions at the center, demanding that the Trump administration close up shop.

Rep. Wasserman Schultz filed legislation that would prevent any member of Congress from being denied access to the Homestead center, or any other immigration center around the country.
