Stephanie Murphy introduces bipartisan statehood for Puerto Rico bill

Share

The notion of making Puerto Rico the 51st state of the union is very popular among both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, but will ever come to pass, even as President Donald Trump opposes the idea?

Trump's "no" to statehood was fueled last year by his ongoing feud with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz over the Hurricane Maria recovery effort.

"With the mayor of San Juan as bad as she is and as incompetent as she is, Puerto Rico shouldn't be talking about statehood until they get some people that really know what they're doing," Mr. Trump said in an interview with Geraldo Rivera's show on Cleveland's WTAM radio.

But as the president show no sign of changing his mind, Florida Republicans like Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, as well as Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Democratic Reps. Darren Soto and Stephanie Murphy, all support statehood for Puerto Rico.

Today, Reps. Murphy and Soto joined Rep. Jennifer Gonzalez to introduce the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act. Back in March, Soto introduced legislation that included cosponsors, Reps. Donna Shalala (D), Alcee Hastings (D), Michael Waltz (R), and Charlie Crist.
