As the Turkish military beings its assault against U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in Northern Syria, Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) has ramped up his criticism of President Trump and his decision to leave Kurdish forces exposed, and potentially facing “annihilation at the hands of the Turkish military.”
Because Kurdish fighters, who have been guarding imprisoned ISIS fighters have been called to the frontline, there is a major risk that those jailed radical Islamist jihadis could escape.
Sen. Rubio stated that it was not a “matter of if,” but “ a matter of when” many of those ISIS fighters will regain their freedom.
Rubio sent out a reminder tweet about how Kurdish fighters were the “primary ground fighters against ISIS in Syria,” adding that by cutting a deal with Turkish President Erdogan,” President Trump has allowed is Turkish counterpart to wipe out the Kurds.
“At request of this administration the Kurds served as the primary ground fighters against ISIS in Syria so U.S. troops wouldn’t have to,” tweeted Rubio “Then cut deal with Erdogan allowing him to wipe them out. Damage to our reputation & national interest will be extraordinary & long lasting.”
The bipartisan resistance President Trump is facing for allowing the Turks to attack the Kurds is significant.
Many of Trump’s Republican supporters in the U.S. Congress, including Rubio and Sen. Lindsey Graham, have condemned the president “abandoning” of the long-time U.S. allies.
