New Bill Sanctions Turkey Over Syrian Invasion

Share

The sunshine state continues to be part of the conversation regarding Syria as Florida Rep. Michael Waltz (R) and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (R) have partnered to introduce a bill sanctioning Turkey over Syrian invasion.

In addition, over 90 Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives also joined the two Florida lawmakers in supporting the bill, which would impose sanctions on Turkey in response to Ankara’s military offensive against U.S.-allied Kurdish forces in Northern Syria.

Speaking on the bill, Rep. Waltz commented that “the situation in Syria is serious, with regional and global implications. With our small amount of troops removed from the region, our Kurdish allies now have no allies to fight ISIS with – and as we saw in Iraq, when America leaves a vacuum, bad things tend to happen.”

Rep. Cheney also commented on the issue, which has taken precedence in the media with the growing number of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle that have criticized President Trump over his recent decision to remove troops from Syria.

“It’s very important that we make sure that we maintain America’s global engagement and that we consider the costs of inaction, we consider the costs of having to go back into situations where we’ve withdrawn from” noted Cheney on ISIS possibly going through a resurgence. She added that “we do not want to repeat the mistakes of the Obama era, which created the mess that we have inherited.”

Last week, Turkey invited northern Syria after President Trump pulled troops from the region. This week, Rep. Waltz took a trip to the White House to discuss concerns with Syria.

He warned, “we cannot take the risk of an ISIS 2.0, so we must do what we can in Congress to mitigate Turkey’s aggression in Syria.”
