FL Blue Dog Democrat Murphy Rails Against Trump Betrayal of Kurds

Share

Florida's Democratic leadership has criticized President Trump’s decision of removing troops from Syria, arguing that the President has abandoned Kurdish soldiers.

Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D) retweeted an article posted by Florida’s Blue Dog Coalition, which details that the United States has now left “High Value” ISIS detainees behind in leaving Syria.

The Coalition detailed that “the images coming out of Syria are deeply disturbing,” noting that “our Kurdish allies – who fought fiercely alongside the U.S. to defeat ISIS – have been betrayed by the President’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops, despite his knowledge of Turkey’s planned operation.”

In a string of tweets, the Coalition continues to voice the disapproval of many Florida lawmakers across the aisle.

Last week, Florida Republicans Rep. Francis Rooney (R) and Senator Marco Rubio  (R) expressed that President Trump was not making the right decision in removing troops from Syria. Since assuming office, the President vowed to wipe out ISIS, and his platform has largely focused on getting rid of terrorism.

However, since announcing his decision, President Trump has remained firm in his position, showing no sign of reversing course anytime soon, but did threaten sanctions against Turkey.

The Blue Dog's further explained that “Congress must send a clear signal to the world that we do not agree with the President’s ill-advised decision.” They called for both the House and Senate to pass “a resolution condemning the President’s decision and urging him to re-engage in the region.”

And, in a rare effort to agree with other Florida Republicans, Florida Democrats agreed that “the absence of U.S. leadership is already beginning to empower ISIS, and this presents a clear threat to our national security.”
