With the U.S. Congress being as divided as it is, some House members are looking past partisanship and are working together to file legislation that benefits all Americans, regardless of political and ideological affiliation.
Florida Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R), the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus to Cure Blood Cancers and Other Blood Disorders, introduced the Timely Re-Authorization of Necessary Stem-cell Programs Lends Access to Needed Therapies (Transplant Act) with Reps. Chellie Pingree (D) and Doris Matsui (D) in order to reauthorize the C.W. Bil Young Cell Transplantation Program and the National Cord Blood Inventory.
Bilirakis’ bill would also renew the federal funding for the national bone marrow and cord registry and the medical centers that carry out treatments.
In addition, the bill would help researchers and medical professionals continue their efforts to deliver “lifesaving transplants” that help treat sickle cell anemia, blood cancers, and other diseases.
“This bill is about providing hope to those who are struggling with life-threatening illnesses,” stated Rep. Bilirakis “ This federal program provides critical support in the advancement of research for better treatments and the infrastructure necessary to organize registries which help ensure transplant patients have access to life-saving procedures. Its reauthorization is vital, and I hope our colleagues will join us in expediting passage of this important legislation.”
