Rubio urges military support for devastated Bahamas

Share

Two days after touring the storm-damaged northern Bahamas, Senator Marco Rubio (R) sent a letter to USAID Administrator Mark Green, “urging him” to ask the Department of Defense to reposition the USNS Comfort from the Caribbean to The Bahamas.

Rubio brought up asking the government to reposition the medical ship shortly after landing with Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Rick Scott at the U.S. Coast Guard Air station this past Friday.

In his letter to Green, Rubio says that “the USNS Comfort, and its crew of trained medical staff, flight deck and ability to desalinate water, would be ideal in helping the Bahamian people.”

Rubio told reporters that the devastation in The Bahamas looked “like a bomb” went off and the area was not a “place that can sustain life much longer.”

“It is critical that during this time of need for our neighbors, the United States uses all of our capabilities to continue to assist in the recovery efforts,” stated Rubio “This includes urgent efforts to save lives. As such, I respectfully implore you to strongly consider a formal request for the USNS Comfort to be repositioned to the Bahamas as soon as possible, as well as any assets needed from the Bataan Amphibious Readiness Group. I stand ready to work with you as we help the Bahamas recover from this deadly storm.”

Sen. Scott says they he has spoken to The White House about cutting off aid to our “enemies” and diverting those funds to The Bahamas.
