Rooney, Democrats vote against Trump's border emergency declaration vote

Share

Rep. Francis Rooney (R) was the only Republican member of the U.S. Congress from Florida to vote in favor of a resolution to terminate President Donald Trump’s national emergency border security declaration.

The measure to cut the border wall funding declaration has now passed in both the Senate and House.

“My vote to terminate the emergency declaration is consistent with my previous votes on this issue and consistent with the rule of law and the Constitutional separation of powers,” said Rooney “The appropriation and allocation of money is the sole responsibility of the Congressional branch. For well over 50 years, Congressional timidity has nurtured a steady evisceration of the Article 2 powers of Congress relative to the Executive Branch.”

House vote came down along political party lines (236-174) with several Republicans having crossed the aisle to side with House Democrats. But while the Senate passed the measure by a vote margin of 54-41 earlier in the week, it failed to reach the 2/3 votes needed to override a presidential veto.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R), who earlier in the year voted against it, did not vote on the measure, but Sen. Rick Scott did, voting to preserve the president’s declaration.

On issues like this, a 'no vote" is considered a vote against the bill, resolution.
