Members of Florida’s congressional delegation, including Sens. Marco Rubio (R) and Rick Scott (R), as well as Reps. Matt Gaetz (R), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), Donna Shalala (D), Ted Deutch (D), and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D), have been pressing the Trump administration to set aside more federal aid to help in the Hurricanes Irma and Michael clean-up effort.
The Trump administration is making good on their promise to send much-needed disaster relief aide to Florida. Rep. Mucarsel-Powell has just announced that in her congressional district, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded “$16,705,525 to Miami-Dade County, $2,853,015 to Monroe County for debris removal resulting from Hurricane Irma, and $1,295,793 to Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) for utility mitigation.”
In total, FEMA has sent roughly $157 million in federal hurricane relief funds to Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
“I’m excited to announce that we’ve received additional funds specifically for the cost of debris removal projects and upgrading sewage systems,” said Mucarsel-Powell. “I’ll keep pressuring the federal government to meet its obligation to South Florida for past storms while we prepare for future stronger hurricane seasons.”
Mucarsel-Powell’s congressional neighbor, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R) has secured over $2 billion dollars in natural disaster relief since 2016.
In a statement, the Congressional Latino-Jewish Caucus denounced the decision, calling it "inflammatory and unwarranted."
