Florida AG Moody warns of hurricane relief scams

Share

Hurricane Dorian has leveled The Bahamas leaving death and destruction across the northern islands of that nation.

Floridians have been quick to respond with aid, one man in Jacksonville having spent $49,000 in generators to send over to needy Bahamians recovering from the storm.

But like Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody just said in a video public service announcement (PDA) as “lives were lost and neighborhoods leveled,” there are now “scammers” rushing in to capitalize on the need for aid, and are taking advantage of the situation for personal benefit.

Moody says to keep an eye out for the scammers, and not to wait for them to solicit charity asks.

Another point Moody made is that make sure donations go to victims, look up the charity in question on charitynavigator.org to find out how much of the money will actually go to administrative costs rather than to victims.
