Rick Scott says he backs "Red Flag" Laws

In response to the recent shooting that have occurred in the United States, “Red Flag” laws have entered the conversation, and lawmakers are showing their support.

A red flag law prevents gun violence by permitting family members or police to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may be a danger to others or themselves.

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott (R) is backing up Senator Marco Rubio’s (R) support for a “Red Flag” gun bill, saying that “Red Flag” laws would help prevent mass shootings and keep our communities safe.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Senator Scott further explains his support, reminding concerned citizens that he is a registered gun-owner and member of the NRA.

With that being said, the Florida Senator asserted that “in the aftermath of the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Washington should stop the partisan bickering and get to work on solution.”

Scott added that “the steps we took in Florida, in addition to committing $400 million to increasing school safety, including a ‘red flag’ provision.”

The former Governor of Florida detailed that “properly constructed, the extreme risk protection order, as it’s known, is a common-sense public safety measure.” And, this has gained the support of other prominent Republican lawmakers such as Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw.

Ultimately, Senator Scott expressed that “the actions of a sick and twisted few cannot be allowed to strip away the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. And let’s be clear: Depriving Americans of their constitutional right to bear arms is the ultimate goal of many on the left who exploit tragedies such as these for political gain.”

However, “that doesn’t change the fact that we must not allow people who threaten harm to themselves or others to have guns.”
