Mucarsel-Powell demands Senate pass gun violence bill

Share

House Democrats are poised to push for more restrictive “gun violence” legislation when they return from the August recess, including a ban of high capacity magazines used in many weapons.

Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D), whose father was shot and killed in Ecuador during a criminal act, is on a crusade of sorts against gun violence in the U.S., counting the days since the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed a universal gun background check bill earlier this year.

Mucarsel-Powell and other Florida House Democratic Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch, have been railing against the Republican-led U.S. Senate for their gun violence inaction, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) has yet to allow a background check bill like the one passed in the House to be voted on.

“178 days since we passed legislation for universal background checks. It is our job to pass legislation that makes our communities safer,” said Mucarsel-Powell “It’s time for the Senate to do their job too!”

President Donald Trump wants action, supporting “red flag” laws and wants to move forward with some form of background check that will help prevent mass shootings.

Mucarsel-Powell also tweeted a fact that the gun lobby would rather not exist, saying that “90% of Americans support universal background checks.”

All the recent public opinion polls show that 90% of Americans support a background check on everyone buying a gun, including a Politifact finding in 2017.

Mucarsel-Powell is running for reelection to the Congress and will face the winner of the Republican primary race between Firefighter Omar Blanco and Restauranteur Irina Vilarino.

Neither Vilarino or Blanco is on record of supporting “red flag” laws or some universal background checks.
