Mucarsel-Powell abandons centrist positions, veers hard left

Freshman Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D) helped Democrats win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives during the 2018 midterm elections by narrowly defeating incumbent Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo.

In the end, Mucarsel-Powell, who ran on a moderate, anti-Trump platform, received 50.7 percent of the vote, while Curbelo, who also took jabs at President Trump, received 49.4 percent of the vote.

Now Rep. Mucarsel-Powell appears to have set aside her “centrist” position and has aligned herself with “The Squad” or as Sen. Marco Rubio (R) calls them, the “radical” and “anti-Semitic” wing of the Democratic Party.

Mucarsel-Powell is lock-step with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” and supports a single-payer healthcare system, even though she opposes the progressive “Medicare for All” measure.

The freshman congresswoman is also on board with impeaching President Trump, joining the group of socialist Democrats in the House who are pushing for impeachment proceedings to be initiated against the president.

“Since the release of Mueller’s report, the President has ignored multiple congressional subpoenas and asserted an abusive and illegitimate use of executive privilege,” said Mucarsel-Powell in a press release. “ All of this in an attempt to hide information and undermine the checks and balances of our government. This President has engaged in behavior that we have not seen, nor would we have allowed, from the other 44 men who have occupied that office. 

“This is why I support opening an impeachment inquiry into the President.” 

Now Mucarsel-Powell’s push for impeachment is being scrutinized after it was discovered that after she announced her support for impeachment, California Billionaire Tom Steyer sent Mucarsel-Powell a max campaign donation of $5,600.

Steyer, who is now running for president, has poured in tens of millions of dollars to affect the impeachment of President Trump.

Mucarsel-Powell isn’t the only Florida member of Congress to receive money from Steyer.

Democrats Charlie Crist and Donna Shalala have both received maximum campaign donations from Steyer during the 2018 midterm election cycle, but they do not support impeachment.

So, where do Florida Democrats stand on impeachment?

According to the Need to Impeach website, Reps. Val Demings, Lois Frankel, Frederica Wilson, and Alcee Hastings, all support impeaching Trump, with Frankel, Hastings and Wilson having cast vote to impeach.

Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Ted Deutch, Darren Soto, Al Lawson, Donna Shalala, and Charlie Crist, all oppose impeachment, but will that change recent Mueller hearings?

Democrats are expected to struggle to retain control of the House, and Mucarsel-Powell’s race will once again be one of the key races to watch.

Mucarsel-Powell is being challenged by Restaurateur Irina Vilarino, who recently surprised politicos with a respectable fundraising quarter.
