Rick Scott's school shooting investigation leads to arrest

Share

Shortly after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) arrested Scot Peterson, the ex-Marjorie Stoneman Douglass High School resource officer on 11-counts related to his ‘inaction’ during the shooting that left 17 students and teachers dead, Sen. Rick Scott (R) said he was glad to see the results of an investigation he first initiated as governor.

Then-Governor Rick Scott was the first to call for a wide-ranging investigation into shooting, including who this incident could have been prevented, and law enforcement’s response.

Hours after the shooting, and when the first signs of the law enforcement shortcomings were coming to light, Scott ordered the Florida Highway Patrol to post officers at Stoneman Douglas High School to help bolster security.

“I called for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the failures in Broward County last year,” said Scott I’m glad that investigation was finally completed. Now it’s time for justice to be served. Had this individual done his job, lives would have been saved. Actions (or inaction) have consequences. We need more accountability, and that includes at the FBI, which has yet to show me a single example of how they’ve improved their processes following the failures in the lead-up to the Parkland shooting.”

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old Peterson is being held on $102,000 bail, and according to ABC News, the prosecutor in the case said that he would have to “wear a GPS monitor and surrender his passport and will be prohibited from possessing a gun”
