Irina Vilariño Launches bid to Unseat Mucarsel-Powell

The 2018 midterm elections were a surprise to many.

For Democrats, it was a surprise because the aftermath was not the result that they expected to have. The “blue wave” that they anticipated ended up being a “blue ripple” as they lost many big races they believed they would win in the end. One of them was Florida’s gubernatorial race between Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis.

Similarly, the 2018 midterm election was also a surprise for Republicans because they lost races they expected to maintain in their control. One of those races was the congressional race between then-Rep. Carlos Curbelo who represented Florida’s 26th Congressional District and the new Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell.

However, in the upcoming 2020 elections, one candidate is looking to ensure another surprise as Republican Irina Vilariño is looking to make Mucarsel-Powell a one term Rep.

VIlariño has launched her bid to face Mucarsel-Powell for her congressional seat in what is expected to be one of the closest congressional races in Florida.

Commenting on her bid, Vilariño asserted that she is “running for Congress because I want to set the record straight that under socialism there is only an equal opportunity to achieve poverty, and I want to remind the liberal extremists that in freedom, every person has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.”

She further explained that her “grandparents emigrated to Cuba from Spain to escape socialism.”

“My parents came to the United States from Cuba to escape communism,” she noted.

And, she asserted that “if we don’t fight to preserve our freedoms here, there is no place left in the world for my daughter to go. We must preserve the American Dream. This is the cause that will define the success of our generation, and I urge you to join with me on this mission.”
