Stephanie Murphy Announces 2020 Reelection Bid

Democratic Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy has risen in the ranks and gained leadership among Florida Democrats, becoming the chairwoman of the Blue Dog Coalition.

This week, Murphy announced her plans to run for a third term in the upcoming 2020 Presidential election, which is an election season that will be marred by contention within her party.

As Democrats look to gain control of the Senate while also aiming to defeat President Trump to control the Presidency, the state of Florida continues to be an important battleground state.

In a video released announcing her reelection bid, Congresswoman Murphy declared that Democrats “have passed historic gun safety legislation and voted to get dark money out of politics.” However, Murphy asserts that there is still work to be done, expressing that “I’m running for three reasons: jobs, security and opportunity.”

Explaining her views in running for reelection, Murphy detailed that “we need more and higher-paying jobs with good benefits. We need to secure this nation and make our communities safer, especially from gun violence. And, we need to ensure every child has an equal opportunity to succeed in the greatest nation on earth.” Murphy asserted that “I want my kids and your kids to reach for the stars and achieve their dreams.”

In response, the Republican National Committee blasted Murphy and Democrats in a digital advertisement. In addition, she was criticized for endorsing Congressman Beto O’Rourke for President in 2020.

Joe Jackson, spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, commented that “after several years as an irrelevant back bencher, it seems that Stephanie Murphy’s moderate act is up. From voting against tax cuts to supporting extreme abortion legislation, and now endorsing left-wing extremist, Beto O’Rourke, it is clear that Floridians will ensure that Murphy is not back in D.C. come January 2021.”

A major issue of contention within the Democratic party has been the rise in Democratic-Socialist views, which others members have disregarded. However, the upcoming election season will certainly touch on the topic during campaign season in the sunshine state.
