Since President Trump made the announcement of creating a Space Force, Florida has been part of the conversation relating to where the force should be stationed.
Today, Florida Rep. Tyler Sirois’s House Memorial 1281 gained impulse by passing the first of its two committees of reference with unanimous support.
The Memorial calls for the creation of the United States Space Force and for the United States Space Command to be established in Florida. Earlier this year, Governor Ron DeSantis called for the Space Force headquarters to be stationed in Florida, and President Donald Trump also proposed the same.
In the Governor's comments, he asserted that the sunshine state “remains the preferred launch site for sending humans and cargo into space,” and President Trump last month signed Space Policy Directive – 4, which establishes the framework for a sixth branch of the armed forces through the development of a legislative proposal that would be considered by Congress. The Space Force that the President has championed would be a part of the United States Air Force, and the headquarters, if stationed in Florida, would be the sunshine state’s fourth military command, joining the U.S. Special Operations Command and the U.S. Central Command.
Sirois, speaking to the members of the House Local, Federal and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee, explained that “the United States and Florida are positioned as global leaders in commercial aerospace.” He further added that “with Florida’s spaceport infrastructure, deepwater seaports, and partnerships with NASA, the 45th Space Wing and the other three combatant commands located in Florida, we are the best choice for the headquarters of U.S. Space Command.”
House Memorial 1281 now heads to the House State Affairs Committee and, if approved by the Florida Legislature, copies of it will soar and be remitted to Congressional members and President Trump with hopes of their support.
