Shalala Wants “Universal Healthcare,” Says she has a “Bolder” Plan

One talking point that has generated conversation in the political landscape is whether or not universal healthcare is viable in the United States.

Democrats have rallied behind the idea, and they’ve been working diligently in order to ensure that it gets done. Having taken control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 midterm elections, they find their control hopeful to have a stronger input in the conversation.

One Democrat that’s lending her voice to the argument is freshman Florida Congresswoman Donna Shalala, who spoke to the Floridian about the issue of universal healthcare and what she’s doing about it from her seat in South Florida.

When asked what she thought about the dialogue that Democrats have been sharing with the media and Republicans, Shalala commented that she’s “in favor of universal healthcare.” In fact, Shalala believes that “medicare for all is one way of getting there. Absolutely, I am in favor of universal healthcare.”

Shalala assured that “medicare for all is simply one strategy.” However, she also explained that she has “a bolder strategy” in order to ensure that healthcare reform is properly tackled.

When asked to further explain what this “bolder strategy” entails and if she already had legislation ready to be introduced, she simply stated that she’s “talking to the committees now.”

Democrats are also fighting for pre-existing conditions to receive coverage, and freshman Florida Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell has also lent her voice to the health care argument.

The topic of universal healthcare has divided many because it has been discussed within the larger conversation of what many argue is a socialist influence that seems to be permeating within the Democratic party.

However, while some Democrats themselves might be distancing themselves from members such as Senator Bernie Sanders or Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Shalala assures that she is focusing her time and effort in order to ensure that Americans receive the best possible healthcare coverage that can be provided for them.
