Lawmakers say Trump's not doing enough for Venezuela

Share

Democratic congressional lawmakers have all-but put President Trump on a clock of sorts, pressing him to do more about the crisis in Venezuela than he already has.

Trump has done what former President Obama wouldn’t or couldn’t do, and that is to just about completely cripple the Maduro regime with sanction after sanction, not including amass international support for the ‘bird-whisperer’s’ removal from office.

So, what are these legislators (all from Florida) after?

Freshman Congresswomen Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (pictured) and Donna Shalala, along with Reps. Darren Soto and Ted Deutch attended a press conference to scold Trump for not doing enough for Venezuelans, challenging Trump not to visit Florida (he did last Friday) without announcing an extension to the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and include more Venezuelan refugees.

"The president should have nothing to do in South Florida if he does not plan to extend a TPS for Venezuelans.”-U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala (D)

“Florida is the home of many Venezuelans facing deportation, and it is very important that the TPS be granted, " she said. "We challenge the president not to come to Florida without announcing the extension of the [Temporary Protected Status]. It is very important to protect the Venezuelans who are already here and in our community,” added Shalala (Sun Sentinel)

The four also hoped, that in terms of humanitarian aid to Venezuela, Trump would not make this issue into some political show “just to win points in the elections,” but that is exactly what they just did by continuing to refer to the president as anti-immigrant.

Mucarsel Powell repeated the politicization of the crisis by coupling Maduro’s regime with congressional Republicans.

"This should not be used as a political weapon by either [Nicolas] Maduro or the Republicans," she said. "We ask the Trump administration to grant the TPS to Venezuelans. It means nothing to say that the Maduro regime is illegitimate and at the same time deport the Venezuelans to that country."

Meanwhile, Republicans Sen. Marco Rubio, OAS Ambassador Trujillo, and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, visited the Colombia-Venezuela border last weekend to assess the migrant crisis along the border of those two countries.

Humanitarian aid is not going in or out of Venezuela because Maduro and his military is not allowing outside help to enter the country.
