There is no question that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is pro-Life, and has pledged to support state Rep. Mike Hill’s (R-Panama City) HB 235 anti-abortion bill.
Planned Parenthood, which sponsors and performs abortions at its clinics nationwide, is also subsidized by the U.S. government has been in DeSantis’ crosshairs, as the former congressman has always pushed for that group’s defunding.
Pro-Choice activists see the bill as “extreme” because the piece of legislation would make abortions illegal when a fetal heartbeat is detected.
So far, DeSantis is keeping his campaign promises and pledges. Just a few weeks back, DeSantis followed up on his promise to fire embattled Broward County Sheriff Steve Israel.
Now DeSantis is making significant changes in the judiciary by tapping three new justices to replace the Florida Supreme Court, which could signal that abortion rights activist’s efforts to fight the Rep. Hill’s bill may be dead on arrival.
The Supreme Court will be asked to rule on cases involving the controversial the state’s “stand your ground” law, as well as other gun rights issues. It will also likely be asked to make decisions in abortion rights cases. In the past, the state’s high court has ruled that abortion is a privacy right that should not be interfered with by the state. That opinion could change with the new court.
“Governor DeSantis has already pledged his support for bills like House Bill 235, one of the most extreme anti-abortion bills ever to be introduced in Florida,” Goodhue said. “This bill provides no exception for rape or incest or even for fetal anomalies.
These types of bills are opposed by everyone from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to Republican Governor John Kasich of Ohio, who vetoed a similar bill citing that it was established to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States and would waste millions in taxpayer dollars just to be overturned.”-The Capitolist
