“This requires hundreds of people working on the logistics and security of it. Most of those people are either furloughed or victims of the shutdown. The president's shutdown. But that isn't the point. The point is security.”
Security is what Speaker Pelosi told reporters was her reason for scrapping he SOTU address. But both the Secret Service and Homeland Security openly disagreed with Pelosi’s, saying that their respective agencies were staffed and in place to do their job.
The government shutdown enters its fourth week, and from the looks of it, there is no end in sight, as both Democrats and the Trump Administration refuse to budge from their respective positions.
"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29."-Speaker Nancy Pelosi
Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is not echoing Pelosi’s security assertion, but did say that “public safety” was being “compromised” because of the shutdown, adding that Trump’s “wall” was causing “real consequences.”
Meanwhile, according to Sen. Rand Paul (R), Trump may be invited Senate Republicans to give the SOTU address from the floor of the senate.
