Nelson's genocide gaffe could sway voters

Share

With one week before election day, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D) is leading Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) in the polls, but barely.

According to the latest public opinion poll, Nelson is only leading Scott by 2 points, well within the margin of error, but all that may very well change.

October surprises come in all shapes and sizes, many times coming in a form of a candidate gaffe.

Nelson may very well have sunk his campaign this past weekend when he equated the climate of U.S. politics with the worst genocide in the history of humanity.

"When a place gets so tribal that the two tribes won't have anything to do with each other ... that jealousy turns into hate…And we saw what happened to the Hutus and the Tutsis in Rwanda, it turned into a genocide. A million-people hacked to death within a few months. And we have got to watch what's happening here."-Sen. Bill Nelson (D)

Scott will surely pounce on Nelson’s and Floridians still on the fence may be swayed to vote against the elder statesman.
