In order to completely focus on the road ahead to become Florida’s next Governor, Congressman Ron DeSantis resigned from Congress today.
In the resignation letter her submitted to Paul Ryan today, Congressman DeSantis explained, “As the Republican nominee for Governor of Florida, it is clear to me that I will likely miss the vast majority of our remaining session days for this Congress. Under these circumstances, it would be inappropriate for me to accept a salary.”
In the letter, the Congressman asks that the resignation be retroactive to September 1st, so that he doesn’t receive payment for the month of September.
Congressman DeSantis poseed the letter on twitter for people to read, and many have commented on his choice to resign from Congress.
Democrats have already criticized his decision, saying that it’s simply a distraction from a report released this weekend saying that the Congressman had spoken at a racially charged conference several times.
Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo wrote in a statement that “Ron DeSantis’ entire political career has been about helping one person: Ron DeSantis. Ron DeSantis can abandon his post, but he can’t avoid questions about why he chose to associate himself with hateful, fringe organizations.”
Congressman DeSantis faces Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in the November general election.
