The month of June is Gay Pride month across the country, where many Americans from all walks of life celebrate the history and plight of the gay community.
One of the most vocal advocates for the struggles of the gay community is former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, who says that she will make it her priority to pass legislation that “protects all Floridians,” including support a bill that would ban the practice of conversion therapy on minors by licensed mental health professionals around the state.
With her pen and her phone, Graham says she will sign a gubernatorial executive order to further protect an individual from discrimination over his or her sexual orientation or gender identity.
“As governor, I will prioritize passing legislation that protects all Floridians. I will ban conversion therapy and I will sign an executive order adding sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes against discrimination.”
For those of you who do not know what “conversion therapy” is, well it’s the practice of trying to change an individual’s sexual orientation or preference.
In other words, there are individuals that will try to change the way of thinking and feeling of those who are attracted to others of the same sex.
Yes, this really does happen.
Graham, like many other Americans, believes this practice has no place in society.
“Conversion therapy is junk science. It’s hurtful and cruel, and there is no place for it in Florida,” Graham said. “We need to welcome and love our young people for who they are. Period. Nine states and in 15 municipalities in Florida have banned this horrible practice, and it’s time for it to be outlawed by the whole state.”-Gwen Graham for Governor press release
