Many Democratic leaders like Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, continue to point at the recent mass shootings because of too many guns floating around the nation, and hope that their efforts will help make their case for stricter gun control measures.
While Rep. Wasserman Schultz continues to press for stricter gun laws, the congresswoman from Weston, Florida, who alongside Rep. Ted Deutch (D), has introduced The Airport Advanced Logistics Emergency Response and Training (ALERT) Act, to address the nationwide airport communications and coordination shortcomings.
One year ago, our community became the latest to experience a mass shooting we never thought would happen here. After conducting a thorough review, I’m proud to introduce this bill to help ensure the safety of travelers at all of our nation’s major airports.
Wasserman Schultz is referring to the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in January 2017 that left 5 dead and many other injured when Esteban Santiago opened fire on travelers after retrieving his 9mm gun from his checked baggage.
“It’s a comprehensive approach so that no matter where you are traveling in the United States, no matter what airport you are going through, the traveling public is subject to the utmost safety standards. That’s what this legislation is all about,” said Wasserman Schultz (CBS4)
What the Wasserman Schultz/Deutch bill would do is expand “the Airport Air Transportation Security Programs administered by TSA to enhance training, require planning, improve communications, and assist customers and the traveling public in the aftermath of any airport emergency.”
